Ancient Chinese Herb Doubles as a Super Anti-oxidant
by Roger L. Fenneman
Since antiquity, Dracaena Cochinchinensis, or Dragon’s Blood, has been regarded as a medicine bestowed by heaven. This blood-red tree resin from a tropical evergreen arbor native to Southeast Asia has been categorized as a blood-quickening medicinal. However, it has the contrary functions of staunching hemorrhage and reducing abscess/ulcer. Owing to it’s functions as stated above, it has been used for centuries to treat “knotty”, or stubborn disorders. The bi-polar functions of Dragon’s Blood are what earned it the nickname “blood-quickening miracle elixir” from Li Shizhen, revered as China’s greatest pharmacologist. He extolled about its benefits in his 16th century classic, the Herbal Foundation Compendium (ca. 1593). Although Dragon’s Blood’s clinical uses have been prolifically documented since the Tang Dynasty (ca. 659), it wasn’t until just recently that modern science has been able to verify it as a super anti-oxidant, possessing an ORAC value of 7,980 units per gram.
This puts Dragon’s Blood in a class of its own. No other anti-oxidant has been concomitantly documented as therapeutically affecting the cardiovascular system and having a very high level anti-oxidant capacity. With the leading cause of death in the U.S. being heart (cardio-vascular) disease and it’s link to oxidative stress, one would expect the focus of an anti-oxidant to be on the circulatory system. Historically, Dragon’s Blood has been used to treat the damages caused by traumatic injuries and chronic diseases. These damages are relegated to the Chinese medical category, “blood stasis”. Coincidentally, modern Chinese medical scholars believe blood stasis to be one of the primary mechanisms of aging. This tree resin is extracted from the sloughed off bark of these ancient trees, some living for centuries. This creates a sustainable harvest in the tree’s native environment. The finished product is 98% pure resin and is considered pharmaceutical grade A.
